Ribadu on Plateau Killings: Lasting Security Threat, Peace is Our Priority

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to restoring peace in Plateau State following a deadly wave of attacks in Bokkos Local Government Area (LGA).
Ribadu made this known during an operational visit to the headquarters of Operation SAFE HAVEN, the military task force maintaining peace in Plateau and other states. His visit follows a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to assess and stabilize the affected communities.
On Wednesday, gunmen launched coordinated attacks on the Ruwi, Hurti, and Tadai communities in Bokkos LGA, as well as Manguna and Dafo villages, leaving over 50 people dead, displacing about 1,000 residents, and destroying more than 300 houses.
Speaking through Samson Zhakom, spokesperson for Operation SAFE HAVEN, Ribadu described the attacks as a continuation of a long-standing security challenge that the federal government is actively working to address.
“Of course, we have to understand, this is a long-standing issue that has been ongoing for decades. For over 20 years we’ve had this,” Ribadu said.
He acknowledged the complexity of the crisis but highlighted the relative progress made over time.
“But you know, the issue of security and situations like this is relative. You have to look at it from the point of what was happening before and what is happening now. I think we have made a bit of progress. The last time we had any serious incident was in December 2023. And now this one.”
Ribadu commended security agencies for their prompt response in containing the attacks and reiterated the government’s resolve to bring those responsible to justice.
He assured residents that efforts are underway to ensure long-term stability in the region.
“We are committed to restoring peace. The improvement in the security setup will be sustained to deliver more operational successes in the country,” Ribadu added.
