2027 Presidency: PDP Must Zone Ticket to South – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) must zone its presidential ticket to the South ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike made the declaration in Abuja on Monday while reading a communique issued after a closed-door meeting of PDP Eminent Stakeholders and Concerned Leaders, drawn from across the country. The meeting was convened to address the ongoing internal crisis within the party.
“This is in the spirit of fairness, inclusion, federal character principles and respect for our party constitution, after the unbroken years of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who is from the North,” Wike said.
The minister said the stakeholders had reviewed the state of the party and were deeply concerned about the crisis rocking the PDP. He blamed the problem on a few individuals within the party who have failed to comply with its constitution.
He said, “The stakeholders resolved that the seemingly intractable crisis in the party was as a result of the inexplicable refusal of a few to adhere to the party’s constitution.”
Wike cited specific sections of the PDP constitution — Sections 36(1)(a)(b)(c), 47(3)(5), and 48(1)(i) — and pointed to the Supreme Court judgment which, he said, confirmed Senator Sam Anyanwu as the rightful and substantive National Secretary of the party.
To that end, the stakeholders “unequivocally reaffirm Sen. Sam Anyanwu as the duly elected and substantive National Secretary of our great party,” the communique stated.
Wike warned that the PDP is on “an inevitable path to self-destruction” if urgent steps are not taken to stop “desperate, divisive, and selfish tendencies” that weakened the party ahead of the 2023 elections.
He said such tendencies have taken root even within the National Executive Committee (NEC), the National Working Committee (NWC), and the Board of Trustees.
“To finally arrest the inexorable drift towards extinction in the party,” Wike said, “the PDP must, without further delay, respect the judgment of the Supreme Court.”
According to the communique, “In line with the provisions of our party constitution, only the National Secretary, Anyanwu, can issue notices of meeting of the National Convention, NEC, National Caucus and the NWC.
“To this end, all notices not issued by him and actions founded on them, including correspondences to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), are null and void and of no effect whatsoever.”
The communique further emphasized: “It is clear from the constitution that only the National Convention, properly and duly constituted, can remove Anyanwu as the National Secretary, arising from his status as a member of the NEC of the party.”
The stakeholders demanded that the Acting National Chairman and the National Secretary jointly issue a formal notice to INEC with the agenda for the next NEC meeting “being the only pathway to abide by extant laws.”
Wike reaffirmed the stakeholders’ commitment to the PDP, calling on members to “uphold the rule of law and respect constitutional mandate.” He also urged party members to reject any moves to destabilize the party and to support the National Reconciliation Committee led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki.
Among those present at the meeting were former Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Samuel Ortom (Benue), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), the PDP National Secretary, Senator Sam Anyanwu, and former Senate Minority Leader, Philip Aduda.
