₦5,000, ₦10,000 Notes Reports Untrue – CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has debunked claims that it is introducing new ₦5,000 and ₦10,000 banknotes, describing the reports as false and misleading.
The clarification follows the circulation of misinformation suggesting that the apex bank had unveiled the high-denomination notes to facilitate cash transactions.
According to the rumors, the CBN planned to introduce the notes to reduce cash-handling costs and enhance liquidity management.
Some reports even attributed statements to a supposed Deputy Governor, Dr. Ibrahim Tahir Jr., alleging that the rollout would commence on May 1, 2025.
However, the CBN has firmly denied these claims. In an official statement, the bank stated: “This content is NOT from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Kindly note that the official website of the CBN is cbn.gov.ng.”
The CBN urged the public to rely only on official channels for accurate information and avoid spreading unverified reports.
